5 Things That Annoy Me About Social Media.

5 Things That Annoy Me About Social Media.

I am an avid user of social media, so much so when I got my phone upgrade I stunned the store manager with my 90GB+ data monthly usage. I believe social media is positive for the most part and a great way to connect with like minded people. It is a great platform to use for promotion and just interaction as it is so much easier to talk to strangers from behind a screen. With accounts on most social media apps plus a blog I am constantly online and as much as I love it, there are a few things I can’t stand.

On Twitter and Instagram this is such a big thing, people following you so you follow back just so they can unfollow. Who has time for that? Like, honestly you have to really commit if you are going to play those silly games. The sad thing is it makes me think twice about following people back.

Insights/analytics are great. They are a brilliant way of tracking your engagement which helps a lot if you plan posts. However I think insights make it really easy for people to obsess over numbers. I am too lazy to check my insights daily to be honest. But what bugs me is constantly seeing people tweet about the followers they are losing. Or hearing people say they would post something but they may lose followers over it. I’m just like as long as you are not posting hate posts it’s not that deep. Not everything is for everyone.

A lot of people live on social media and are constantly comparing themselves to other people, putting themselves down and aspiring to unrealistic goals. For me, I don’t compare myself to other people as I believe you should be competing with yourself to constantly do better. But I have been compared to other people and I find that just as annoying. It doesn’t offend me but I’m like no…. I’m just me. Truth be told I’m that person that if you say I look like someone I will point out every single thing that shows we don’t lol.

This can be a difficult one. I find that if you are trying to do something for yourself and promote it online you receive support from strangers the most. Now in the long run that is great as you are trying to build a following.

However when you are starting out gaining support from friends/family can be a mammoth task. They may even tell you they support you or like what you are doing, but not on social media. Youtube, Facebook, Twitter…. People you actually know face to face are just not as supportive. I don’t know whether it’s out of scepticism, genuinely not liking what you do or being sly haters but it’s just the way it goes.

In life you are always going to encounter ‘cliques’ of people and social media is no different. My issue is if the goal is to grow your audience/engagement of social media, wouldn’t mixing with different people be the way to do so? Especially if you are on social media to build a following for whatever you do. But I find people prefer to stay within these safe tight knit groups where you support each other and only each other.  Maybe I’m the odd one and this makes sense, who knows? It just seems counterproductive to me.

What are your social media pet peeves?

Do you think social media is positive?

I am stunned by your 90gb usage :’) But it’s so understandable when everything is online.
My biggest peeve is also the not so fun follow/unfollow game, although I don’t do it for the numbers, I consider it highly offensive when people go out of their way to gain followers in such a stupid way.

Exactly that’s what it is for me, I just think how rude lol. Yeah I know I was disgusted when they told me 90 was by average usage. It’s crazy xfjx

You’ve really hit the nail on the head, these all bug me no end too! I follow because I’m interested in someone’s content, not their potential to follow me back. It’s so frustrating seeing people play that game and grow from it far more than those who try to expand the honest way. I think social media does have its positives, but it’s easy to lose sight of them when we get caught up in the numbers.

Definitely I think it’s important to stay focused and not make it about numbers. Once you do you lose track of your unique quality and do things just for those numbers xfjx

It really is, and just frustrating xfjx

The follow unfollow thing drives me crazy sometimes because it’s like people think you don’t see it! I also agree with comparison and things being unrealistic I feel like this often because I spent too much time on social media x

Its so easy to spend too much time on social media. I think everyone should take breaks, even if it’s setting a curfew. I met someone who signsee out of everything at 9 every night. Don’t know if I could do that but I understand the concept xfjx

Gosh 90+GB?! That’s crazy! I can see what you mean though…. I’ve been trying to wean off social media for the past month and have actually scheduled two weeks of being social media free towards the end of March, and I’m pretty nervous about it. It’s annoying how reliant we have become on such a thing…

I totally agree with you on the insights part. I thought it was a good idea to change my insta to a business one but now I can’t stop looking at my stats. It’s such a bad habit!

Its really hard not to watch your stats like crazy. Wow two weeks is long but the break is probably going to do you a world of good.😊 xfjx

Couldn’t agree more with the follow/unfollow games! I just don’t understand it and like you, makes me wonder if it’s worth following back. The only people who know about my blog in my “real” life are my boyfriend and two of my friends. None of them really know what I do. I don’t think they’ve ever read anything and I like to keep it separate from my real life anyway. I find it easier to write personal stuff if I know family aren’t seeing it.

Never thought of it that way. That’s probably a great way to do it I guess it allows you to write completely freely. Yeah the unfollowers thing really pisses me off xfjx

  6. 5th March 2017 / 1:17 pm

This is a great post! The whole follow/unfollow thing really flips my bitch switch especially when I’m just starting out on my blog and it’s super noticeable when people do it. 😡

Btw, I am in AWE of your data usage! I don’t think I reach that in a year! 😂

Yessss this is such a great post….I agree with all 5 points. Social media should be a positive platform…the clue is in the name SOCIAL but in the last few years it has been used soo negatively and people get upset with the lack or loss of followers or constant comparing themselves to others. This post has given me inspiration for a blog post x

I totally agree with all of this! I love Instagram but the follow/unfollow really bugs me!

    Great post!!

Brilliant post! I have so much social media pet peeves as well. The follow/un-follow one is just absolutely ridiculous; it’s so stupid and pointless. Like, do these people think we don’t KNOW what they’re doing? The cliques one as well is a funny one; I totally understand that you’re going to get that in every single aspect of life. School, work, blogging. It can’t really be avoided and I think it’s fine to have a group of people online that you’re closer to. But people who WON’T venture out of their clique to even be civil or support other bloggers just baffle me <3

Exactly it’s the people that won’t venture out that get to me. Naturally we will be drawn to certain people and for groups and bonds. But I don’t get how people become so closed to change and new interactions. Thanks for reading hun xfjx

You are so right. Everything, I mean everything you said is so true. I love social media and for my blog, it’s very necessary. I am not sure if this is a pet peeve but people don’t like sharing stuff on their account like even my friends and family find i so had to share on Facebook. oh well, love the realness and honesty of this post. well done!
